Winds of Change

After a month of hard work out of the water in a boatyard in Virginia, we felt ready to set off towards our goal of crossing the Atlantic Ocean towards Europe. We had made all the necessary repairs, checked all of the critical systems, amassed supplies, inventoried provisions for the long journey ahead, and planned for the transit and import of the pets. The icy cold winter had begun to subside, as we headed north towards New England. There we would rendezvous with my parents one final time stateside, before setting off for the Azores, mainland Europe and eventually the Mediterranean and Adriatic.

Current journeys and future travel plans

I just returned from three weeks in Europe visiting family and friends in both Germany and Croatia. This trip included my usual stops in Munich, Cres, and Buzet with day trips to various other places. Leaving balmy warm Mexico for chilly Europe took some getting used to but I was fortunately didn’t experience the usually persistent Bura wind conditions while in Cres, this kept the temperatures mild. Nice enough even to go for a boat ride.

Visits Aboard and Abroad

Winter weather permeates the Pacific Northwest. February has been a chilly month, with overnight temperatures routinely dipping into the 20F-30F range. Though I’ve remained toasty warm below deck thanks to our old-model Dickinson Antarctic diesel heater, I’ve awoke numerous mornings to find a thin layer of ice on the water’s surface. Not sea-ice by any means, rather a layer of frozen freshwater condensate.
